Tell us About Yourself
Hi, I'm Kai! I grew up in New York, in the suburbs near the city. I lived there for most of my life with my dad, mom, and two cats. I became involved with my high school's Asian Culture Club where I expanded on my interest of dance, leading me to audition and get into a dance team in NYC! Along with that, I explored art as well in high school. I struggled to find myself in what I wanted to do as I believed I couldn't use art as a reasonable avenue for university. After participating in a program for game design, I realized I could combine those two channels and really work on that intersectionality in a career. Specifically, I found that the process of level design was similar to that of a building, in that both must consider how a person/player will move through the space, and how the environment and other factors will change a person's perception. I still hope to explore the ways these two fields can interact through university! Outside of academics, I really enjoy playing games! From my first DSI in kindergarten, I always really enjoyed the graphics, art, and the experience of playing one in general. Through a rough time in junior year, (perhaps a bad decision) I re-discovered my love for games. Asides from that, I like reading books and watching movies (I try to keep logs of them)!

What are your college and career goals?
Short term, I hope to do really well in my first and second semesters, and when I have a chance, take the pre-requisite course for IS and see if I like it. Potentially I hope to combine my two interests. I want to become involved with student life and clubs and take advantage of everything CMU has to offer. Career-wise, I hope to go into the tech industry where I can combine both art and CS, potentially doing something AI/VR-related in structure. Helping marginalized communities through exposure to the same resources in other communities is something I hope to do as well. However, everything may still be up to change given a year.

What do you look for in a potential big sister?
Who do you look up to most? Why?
What kind of personalities do you get along with?
What is a moment or achievement you're proud of?
What qualities do you value in a person?
What do you hope to gain from the new member process of Kappa Phi Lambda?
I look for someone who I can laugh with and who I can get along very well with. I hope to have a close friend that I can talk to at any time and look to for advice as well; I want to click with them in a sense.
While there's no one I specifically look up to as a role model and place on a pedestal, there are people I definitely can learn from. I find Princess Diana to be a source of inspiration, in her rebellion against the royal family, her support for the LGBTQ+ community, her advocation for mental health, and the way she chose to raise her sons (expose them to "real society"). Her fiery spirit and her eloquent way of presenting and speaking is something I feel inspired by.
I get along with easy-going, chill, spontaneous (kind of), and funny people. I don't think I clash with any personalities besides that of my mother.
I was proud when I finished my final game after only being given a week to create it. The feeling of playing the game, with minor bugs, and actually having a playable iteration is something I'll never forget. Being able to see my art and all my assets I created in game made me feel proud in a way.
I value authenticity, passion, creativity, openness (for communication), empathy, and humor.
I hope to learn more about how the process works and hope to gain more on KPL as a whole.
