Tell us About Yourself

HI! My name is Suzy Xu, but my full name is Susan and I don’t like it… because it sounds old. I am pretty introverted and shy, but college definitely forced me to go out and socialize and be more extroverted! Not going to lie, it takes a little bit of time for me to completely open up, therefore I am an onion, and an onion is me. I would say I’m a pretty chill and easy-going person. I’m always down to try new things, so I love doing activities/going out with people because I feel like experiencing something together is always a great way to bond! A topic I like talking about with my friends is what animal would represent each of us, but apparently a lot of friends have trouble thinking of which animal I resemble. People have said I remind them of a deer because I’m very calming to be around. For me, I think I just take a while to recharge my social battery and when it reaches maximum capacity I get my outbursts of energy. Also, I feel like I also tend to get excited over random things as well, especially if we share similar interests or hobbies! Because like… we are practically soulmates at that point. Which brings me to my sense of humor. Personally, I think it’s very sarcastic and dumb (LOL), the randomest things will make me laugh. Also! I tend to spew pick-up lines randomly and see how people react to them… I think it’s entertaining, haha. Another thing to be aware of is my ~flirtiness~, I like expressing my love and affection by complimenting you and showing my inner simp ;) On the topic of personality, I’ve always been interested in astrology and mbti but I’m not super into it, like I probably can’t guess which zodiac sign or mbti you are, but I do like analyzing mine. I think it’s interesting and I feel like it also leads to interesting discussions with others. I think I’m pretty empathetic and aware of my surroundings, I’m generally pretty good at noticing people’s discomfort or if there is a shift in their mood. Being an only child with busy parents, I think the thing that makes me the happiest is just being there for someone when they need it whether that’s someone to rant to or just being together, each of us doing our own thing. One last thing… my friends make fun of my typos, WHICH I AM TRYING TO WORK ON, so please ignore them for the sake of my pride T^T

What are your college and career goals?

My short term college goal is to have a healthy balance between school and work… and to pass all my classes T^T. Last semester, I neglected my health a lot by either compromising sleep for work or work for socializing. However, this semester I’ve been working out more to offset the amount of times I spend sitting and staring at a screen.
One of my long term goals in college is to follow through with what I want to do. Oftentimes I feel overwhelmed or get scared of rejection so I would chicken out on participating in a club or put off looking for research or internship opportunities. That’s why I want to be comfortable with trying out new things without thinking too much of other people’s approval. I also hope to meet new people, which sounds cliché but I actually get a lot of energy from interacting with new people! I feel in the process of meeting new people I might also figure out what I want to do with life and what piques my interest. Hopefully, I can find something that I wouldn’t mind doing as a job and something that won’t make me depressed LOL.

Something that brings genuine joy to me is dancing which I didn’t realize until getting into college and getting into dance again. I stopped dancing after a year or so in high school because of my schedule and COVID >:( However, aftering attending Helix Dance Crew’s open classes as well as KPDC’s open classes, I got reminded of how much dance relieves my stress. Anyways, I love anything related to music! I really like curating different playlists on Spotify for different moods ( Some of my favorite artists are NIKI, Keshi, Lauv, Taylor Swift, and space x! I also enjoy doing mixed martial arts. I feel like learning some form of self-defense is pretty useful and overall it’s a great way to work out. I was an assistant instructor for the 5-7 white belt class as well as a summer camp counselor for the summer program at my dojo, so I have many funny stories to tell. I used to read a lot but now I only read webtoons because they’re shorter and I like looking at the pictures, hehe. When I have time, I like watching K-dramas! My favorite K-drama is Strong Woman Do Bong Soon or Law School and my favorite movie is Big Hero 6. Romance or thriller is usually my go to genre. If I wasn’t ~broke~, I would have a killer wardrobe but I still really like crocheting or embroidery. It’s really fun to do when you have a show to binge because for me I like to do something while watching a show, it makes me feel more productive, haha.

What are some things you can't live without?

I never knew how nice noise cancellation was until I got the Airpod Pros. They are honestly a life changer, I can do work almost anywhere I want without being distracted and it helps me focus more while I do work. AND THE CONVENIENCE OF NOT HAVING WIRES GET TANGLED WHEN IM DOING SOMETHING, BLESSS DA LORD MA GAWD. I also can't live without my plushie corgi, Bread, but he is currently held hostage right now by my floormate... Bread is so squishy and huggable and makes my life 10x better. This is probably cliché, but I also can't live without music because I use it as a mood booster for when I'm happy and I use it as a coping mechanism for sad boi hours. This is also very cheesy, but I can't live without the people that I care about. I genuinely gain so much joy from making and seeing the people around me happy :) I know this is irrelevant but I’m writing this in gates and I just saw a guy wearing a pink hat WITH FLOPPY BUNNY EARS, I’m literally crying.

What do you look for in a potential big sister?
Who do you look up to most? Why?
What kind of personalities do you get along with?
What is a moment or achievement you're proud of?
What qualities do you value in a person?
What do you hope to gain from the new member process of Kappa Phi Lambda?

Honestly, all the sisters that I've talk to in KPL are so lovely! I think I would want my potential big sister to feel like a sister, haha. Just someone where I feel like I can click with in terms of interests and humor and someone that I feel comfortable with just someone where I can come to whenever I have something on my mind. I also think I would like a potential big who is more outgoing and would be down to do spontaneous things! I'm also more of a homebody so I would also like a big who would be down to cook together or chill at home. Of course, I would totally be down to go on trips!!!!!!

I don't have a specific person I look up to, I think I find things to learn from everyone around me. From my parents, I've learned to be resilient and not to give up when faced with hardships because you can always achieve something if you put your mind to it. I also look up to my friends because they've showed me that sometimes you can't compromise your values and beliefs even when you're being pressured by others. They've also motivated me to become more empathetic and be more giving in ways I wasn't before. There are also many teachers and professors that I look up to since many of them come from very different backgrounds, some privileged and some not but they still all accomplished tremendous feats. They've showed me that everyone has their own paths and you shouldn't compare your life to others expecting to receive the same thing. They've also showed me that there is more to life than just studying but rather it's the experience that makes life fulfilling.

I think I get along with both extroverts and introverts, but I think I tend to get along better with more outgoing people just because sometimes I feel pressured making conversation but usually after getting to know a person for a while outgoingness doesn't really matter. I also think I get along with people who are more easy-going and chill. Honestly, there are just some people that I click with no explanation haha.

A moment that I'm proud of is actually been this past two months. I think last semester, my balance with school and personal life wasn't very good but this semester I've been actively working out and participating in the clubs without feeling nervous or scared. I also feel like I'm challenging myself in terms of coursework as well and actively seeking help when I need it (which was something I didn't do as much as I should of last semester). AND OF COURSE getting a bid from KPL hehe.

Honestly --> I really don't like people beating around the bush
Reliability --> I really value people who keeps their word and will follow through with what they planned
Respect --> Everyone is different so I think it's important for people to treat those different from them with respect
Generosity --> I like to share the things that make me happy with others so I like when others do the same
Open-minded --> I like trying out new things so I like being with people who would want to do random things with me

I think it's just getting to know the KPL sisters as well as the new potential members and building a community where everyone feels loved and safe! I would also love to learn about the traditions of the sorority and bonding with everyone through shared experiences :)
