more  about yeji!

I’m sort of a contradictory person if that makes any sense. I get bored easily and don’t like something for too long, but I’ve liked BTS for almost half my life. I love visiting different countries but also love staying inside my bed and watching anime or YouTube. I’m an introvert but become pretty loud once I get to know people. I like having my things in the right places but my desk always ends up being pretty messy. I also absolutely love cats but I get a little scared if they’re too close to me. I find this part of me pretty quirky and interesting. Other than that, I love collecting things. When I was little, I would collect Pokemon cards. But now, I’m collecting posters, pins, and figurines of my favorite game or anime characters.

Yeji's Personal Story

Yeji's Hobbies, Passions & Interests

I love playing music. I love playing music. I’ve gone through the typical Asian route of learning the piano, violin, and the flute. But I ended up picking up the french horn and played in my school’s wind ensemble and orchestra for a long time. So naturally, I love listening to classical music. But other than that, I love listening to K-Pop and J-Pop. Recently, I’ve been listening to more of Seventeen and EXO’s songs, as well as BTS’ solo albums.

Another hobby I have is cosplay. I had nothing to do during the summer of my senior year so I started to watch anime and play a bunch of new games. And when I came across the cosplay club at the club fair, I thought it would be pretty cool to dress up as my favorite characters. After going to a couple of anime conventions, I decided to pick cosplay as one of my main hobbies.

I also love playing games. There are literally a hundred games downloaded on my phone. I don’t play all of them but I just left them there in case I ever wanted to return to them. I mainly play League of Legends, TFT, Honkai StarRail, and a little bit of Genshin.

And some other little hobbies I have on the side are writing, singing, and doodling. I’m not the best at any of them but I do enjoy doing it so sometimes when I have spare time, I find myself doing those activities. I love karaoke and always make sure to go to one whenever I’m hanging out with my friends (in Korea).

Yeji's Personality

I’m pretty introverted and love staying inside my room. But once I get to know people, I become pretty loud and talkative. If I stay outside for too long though, my social battery tends to drain and I sort of zone out. I’m also pretty affectionate. I love hugging and linking arms with my friends. Something that’s a little weird about me is that I love to plan things out but I don’t always go through with the plan. So you might find me getting excited about planning out what to do on the weekends but never actually doing it. I’m sort of a people pleaser. I love to make people laugh and feel comfortable around me. So if I ever look nervous or stay quiet, it’s just me trying to come up with fun things to talk about.

Yeji's Sense of Humor

My sense of humor is sort of questionable with a weird mix of dad jokes, sarcasm, and teasing the hell out of people

One of my proudest moments is pulling through the final project of 112. I’m not the best coder out there and I’m a Tepper student for a reason. I had a lot of ambitions when I decided to make a space shooter-like game and wanted various features like character customization, different bosses, different stages, different game modes, etc. In the beginning, I was pretty intimidated and didn’t know how to start. But once I got along with it, it started to become fun (except for the debugging parts). And in the end, although it was a pretty scuffed game, it worked and I was so proud of myself for not giving up in the middle and switching to an easier option.

Yeji's Proudest Moment

Yeji's Perfect Day

It would be zero work for the entire day. I would be sitting at a cafe, drinking milk tea with my laptop in front of me. I would be listening to music and writing a random story of a plotline I found interesting. And at night, I would like to be snuggling inside my bed with all the lights turned off and watch a Ghibli movie

Values, goals, challenges!

Top Values/ Principles

I value trust and loyalty the most. It’s mostly because I take deep care in the relationships I have with my friends and family. Obviously, trust is one of the most important part of a healthy relationship. The more I trust, the more I open up about my vulnerabilities and worries I have. And through these interactions, I’m able to form deeper and more meaningful relationships. Also, I think it’s a great way to show that I care about them and am willing to stay by their side no matter what happens

who do you look up to?

Someone I looked up to and am still in contact with is my band teacher from high school. I’ve seen him around since fifth grade and he’d been my favorite teacher ever since. He had every good qualities of a good teacher. He was funny, patient, made music fun to play and listen to, knowledgeable, and stern when he needed to. Within the bounds of music, he could literally do anything. He could play and tune every single band instrument. He could fix the instruments, too. And whenever someone was struggling with the rhythm or the notes, he knew how to teach it to them so it stayed in their head. It always amazed me how passionate he is when it comes to music and inspired me to be the same for whatever I end up doing.

Academic/ Career/ Life Goals

3 areas for Personal Growth

Approach to conflict

I don’t have a specific career in mind but there are some life goals. I would love to find a job that allows me to have a good work life balance. I value personal time and I wouldn’t give it up for more money. But I would like to earn enough money for me to enjoy my hobbies and go on occasional vacations with my family without worrying about money constraints. I would also like to find a job that I enjoy. I know it might be hard but even if I’m earning less money, I’d rather be enjoying my job than hating it.

One area I want to work on is expanding my knowledge. I tend to only be knowledgeable in what I’m interested in. If anyone asked me to list out ten Greek gods, I could do that in a heartbeat. But if anyone asked me to talk about anything in politics, I would have a hard time. So breaking out of my comfort zone and learning beyond what I’m interested in is something that I’m working towards.

Another area I want to work on is my physical health. I’m not really a healthy person. I don’t go to the gym regularly and my parents sometimes get worried about that. I’m planning to do something about that and figure out a manageable schedule in which I can get both my work done and some working out done. The last area I want to work on is my networking(?) skills. As I mentioned somewhere above, I’m an introvert and have a hard time walking up to someone and saying hi. As a business student, it’s definitely something I need to work on.

Whenever I face conflicts, I try to figure out the root problem. And once I do, I would try to come up with a solution to solve that problem. The ways I come up with a solution vary with the situation. Sometimes I would go on the internet or sometimes I would get advice from my friends. And after a thorough evaluation of the situation as well as the potential solutions, if I decide the benefits of going through with the solution outweigh the harms, I put it into action.

Dealing with stress and/or frustration

Communication

Whenever I get stressed, I take a break and have some “me time”. This worked the best for me and helped me take my mind off of the things that stress me out. I would make myself a cup of milk tea and watch YouTube for an hour or so. Or I would play a round of LoL with my friends. Once I’m done with that, my stress levels are usually low enough for me to continue with what I was doing.

I’m not sure if I can exactly describe my communication style but I’ll try! I tend to be a little blunt but not blunt enough to be rude. I also joke around a lot and like to keep the conversation light. So whenever I’m talking with other people, I hope that they don’t beat around the bush too much and laugh along to my jokes.

Personalities or characteristics

I tend to get along with people who are talkative and love sharing hobbies. When I’m with those kinds of people, it really helps me bond with them and come up with fun things to do with them. I don’t really have personalities or characteristics that I clash with but I sometimes get a little awkward if people are too quiet. But it’s more of a me problem of wanting to talk with them but can’t think of anything to talk about.

What qualities do you value or appreciate most in a person?

I appreciate it when people go out of their way to help me or hang out with me. When I’m struggling with something or feel bored, someone sending me a message asking if they’re needed really brightens my day even if they don’t end up actually doing it. The fact that they took some time to think about me really makes me happy.

Getting to know yeji
as a pnm!

Why do you want to join Kappa Phi Lambda?
What are you looking for in a big sister?
What do you hope to gain from being a part of Kappa Phi Lambda?
What kind of support do you hope to receive from your line sisters, Active Sisters, Alum, etc.?
Do you have any goals you would like to accomplish as a PNM or future Sister?
What do you hope to contribute to Kappa Phi Lambda?
How would you want to use your platform as a Sister of Kappa Phi Lambda?
Are you more of a leader or follower? Why?
What are some of your strengths? Weaknesses?

I wanted to join KPL because whenever I’m looking at Instagram, I always see the sisters having fun and spending time together. As an international student, being in a community like that was really appealing to me. And after I attended the events and got to know some of the sisters, I wanted to join even more because everyone was friendly and sweet.

I hope to get along with all the sisters and spend fun times with them. Although KPL is a small sorority compared to the other sororities in CMU, I still think it’s somewhat of a big group. And knowing so many people from different backgrounds and different interests will help me build my relationship skills, too

I would like to be close friends with a Big Sister. This means doing fun things together like going on boba dates, eating out together, and sending each other funny posts on social media. I’d also like to be able to rely on them for some things. I’m a sophomore so I am pretty familiar with the campus, but I haven’t really gone outside of campus so I think it’ll be nice if the Big Sister knew some good food places or just fun places to hang out in Pittsburgh. Some qualities/traits I would prefer would be someone who is sweet, friendly, likes to talk, and someone I can joke around with.

I don’t have anything specific in mind but I would be very appreciative if my line sisters or any of the active or alumni would check in with me and ask if everything is going alright. And it would also be kind of helpful if I could get help with some of my classes, too.

One goal I have is to form tight relationships with the other PNMs. I think the whole procedure will be more enjoyable if everyone can trust each other and are close. So I hope to go out of my way to know each one of them better and create a supportive and positive environment.

One of my biggest strengths is my bright personality and energy. And I hope to contribute to KPL by being a positive and enthusiastic member who is always willing to help out on events and lifting everyone’s moods.

I would use my platform as a sister of KPL to bring more awareness for Asian culture through participating and planning cultural events and activities. I would also love to give back to the community by participating in the volunteering events.

I’m a mix of both. I’ve been in a leadership role multiple times. I’ve been part of the student council and I enjoyed taking responsibility and distributing roles. However, sometimes it got stressful and I would take a step back and let someone else take the leadership role.

Strengths:

  • I’m pretty good at listening to what others have to say

  • Being encouraging

  • Responsible

  • Grit

  • I’m also good at staying positive

  • I acknowledge my mistakes quickly

Weaknesses:

  • I tend to like getting things done fast and might get a little impatient if something’s done slowly

  • I sometimes get a bit lazy and procrastinate

  • I also worry too much about things
